Overview

Island Peak Climbing: A Classic Himalayan Expedition

Island Peak Climbing is one of the most popular Himalayan expeditions in Nepal. This adventurous journey combines trekking through the famous Khumbu Region with a rewarding mountaineering experience. The trail offers warm Sherpa hospitality and breathtaking mountain views throughout the route.

For general travel information about Nepal’s mountains, you can also visit Nepal Tourism Board.

Trek to Namche Bazaar and the Everest Trail

Your Island Peak expedition begins with a scenic flight to Lukla. After arriving, the trek continues toward Namche Bazaar. At Namche, you will rest for at least one day to acclimatize. From there, the trail follows the classic Everest route along the Dudh Khosi and Imja Khola rivers.

Along the way, you will pass Sherpa villages, monasteries, and temples. The trail moves through forests of rhododendron and fir before reaching high alpine meadows above the tree line. After proper acclimatization, the trek heads north to the Khumbu Glacier. The first major highlight is reaching Kala Patthar and the Everest Base Camp, both offering impressive views of Mt. Everest.

Journey Toward Island Peak Base Camp

After exploring Everest Base Camp, the trail descends along the Khumbu Glacier toward Dingboche. From there, you reconnect with the Imja Khola and continue east toward Island Peak Base Camp near Pareshaya Gyab (5,070m). Many climbers also summit Imja Tse, which can be completed within a day.

You will spend several days in this remote part of Sagarmatha National Park. A high camp is set at 5,640m, where final preparations begin. With ropes and crampons, climbers traverse glaciers and snow slopes on the last push to the summit.

Summiting Island Peak: A Rewarding Climb

Standing on the summit of Island Peak offers a 360-degree panorama of the eastern Khumbu Region. Surrounding the summit are spectacular mountains including Nuptse (7,879m), Lhotse (8,501m), Lhotse Middle (8,410m), and Lhotse Shar (8,383m). Makalu (8,875m) rises prominently in the distance, creating one of the most stunning sights in the Himalayas.

Return to Lukla and Fly Back to Kathmandu

After successfully summiting Island Peak, you descend gradually to Namche Bazaar and continue toward Lukla. A short flight from Lukla takes you back to Kathmandu, completing your Island Peak Climbing adventure.
